Arlington residents can save money on their flood insurance premiums thanks to the efforts led by the City's Public Works and Transportation Department.
Starting now, Arlington residents who have homes in a floodplain designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) can receive an additional 5%, up to a maximum of 20% total, discount on their flood insurance premiums. And, other homeowners can receive a 10% discount.
Standard homeowners' insurance policies do not cover damage from floods, so flood insurance is recommended to protect your property. The City of Arlington participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) which offers flood insurance to all homeowners, renters, and business owners who live within a community that adopts and enforces ordinances that meet FEMA standards to reduce the risk of flooding.
The NFIP Community Rating System (CRS) Program recognizes community floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum FEMA standards and help reduce the risk of flooding. Under the CRS Program, flood insurance premium rates are discounted to reward community actions that meet the three goals of the CRS, which are: (1) reduce flood damage to insurable property; (2) strengthen and support the insurance aspects of the NFIP; and (3) encourage a comprehensive approach to floodplain management.
The CRS Program uses a Class rating system to determine flood insurance premium reductions for all policy holders. On May 1, 2018, Arlington's CRS rating was upgraded from Class 7 to a Class 6.
To achieve the Class 6 rating, the City was credited for its stormwater education and outreach program, capital improvement project planning and implementation, buyout of flood prone properties, preserving open space in the floodplain, maintaining historic floodplain records and having higher building standards that reduce the risk of frequent flooding.
