MyArlingtonTV Tours the New George W. Hawkes Downtown Library: First Floor
Director of Libraries Yoko Matsumoto is taking residents and visitors on a tour of the new George W. Hawkes Downtown Library in a three-part series for MyArlingtonTV showcasing each floor.
The Downtown Library, located at 100 S. Center St. just north of Arlington City Hall, opened to the public on June 16, 2018. The building was designed with public input to provide access, knowledge, and resources through cutting-edge technology, extensive print and digital collections and dynamic and enriching programming for the entire community.
Visitors are welcomed into the first floor of the library through the Ruthie Brock and Allan Saxe Lobby. Enjoy Wi-fi access in a dedicated lounge, or in benches and open seating throughout the lobby. An express computer station offers fast Internet access to patrons who need to get online immediately. Residents and visitors can stop by the lobby's vending machines or occasional pop-up shops from local restaurants for a quick bite to enjoy outdoors.
Also located on the first floor, the Otis and Rosie Brown Living Room is the bustling heart of the library. You can browse new books and large print on the first floor, then check out books and other items at self-service stations. Kids will also want to climb through the DISCOVER Wall's tunnels, sit in its cozy reading nooks, and then explore the rest of the children's area beyond the wall.
Stay tuned for next week's episode touring the second floor of the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library! Regular hours of operation are Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Downtown Library will be open on Sundays all year long.
