The Texas Department of Transportation proposes to reconstruct the Interstate 20, Interstate 820 and US 287 interchanges in southeast Tarrant County to improve mobility and safety. The proposed $1.25 billion project, which includes a portion of Arlington, is referred to as the "Southeast Connector."

TxDOT will hold a public meeting from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2018 to present recommended improvements to the Southeast Connector and to receive public comments. The meeting, which will be an open house format, will be held at Dunbar High School cafeteria, 5700 Ramey Ave., in Fort Worth.

The limits of the proposed improvements include:

  • I-20 from Forest Hill Drive to Park Springs Boulevard
  • I-820 from I-20 to Brentwood Stair Road
  • US 287 from Bishop Street to Sublett Road

Along I-20 between I-820 and US 287, the alternative analyses recommend reconstructing existing interchanges and adding general purpose lanes and collector-distributor road systems to separate traffic movements and eliminate weaving. Along I-820 from I-20 to US 287, I-820 and US 287 run concurrently. The analyses recommend widening and reconstruction of the general purpose lanes to align travel lane and reduce major weaving movements.

Throughout the project study limits, TxDOT is evaluating and recommending improvements promoting safety, including reconstructing interchanges, widening or reconstructing general purpose lanes, modifying ramp locations to minimize weaving movements and eliminate left-hand exit ramps. Other proposed improvements include reconstructing or providing additional frontage roads to incorporate shared-use lanes for bicycles and vehicles, and adding sidewalks to accomodate pedestrians.

Following the public meeting, preparation of preliminary design and environmental assessment documents will take place in winter of 2019 with hopes of obtaining environmental clearance in Spring 2020.

"Arlington is extremely interested in efforts to reconstruct this important interchange to improve mobility and safety in one of the gateways to our city," said Alicia Winkelblech, assistant director of strategic planning.

Written comments from the public are requested and may be submitted for a period of 15 calendar days after the July 19, 2018, public meeting. Written comments may be submitted either in person at the public meeting, by mail or by email. Comments must be postmarked on or before Friday, August 3, 2018, to be included in the Public Meeting Summary.
