Through gifts, cards and singing, members of the Lucretia Council Cochran Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are working to spread Christmas cheer to veterans in Arlington and beyond.
Recently, chapter members honored veterans at 12 Arlington nursing and retirement homes by donating 120 gift bags. Members thanked each veteran for his or her service when presenting the bags. Veterans at Arlington Plaza also enjoyed a sing-along, singing the hymn of each branch of service.
Additionally, the chapter donated 477 Christmas cards with stamped envelopes to soldiers hospitalized at Walter Reed Hospital so that those veterans could send a card to loved ones during the holiday season.
Earlier this fall, Lucretia Council Cochran Chapter members Mary McElwee, Fran Goreham, Barbara Smith, Linda Hotchkiss, Suzanne Sweek and Cindy Sharp knitted or crocheted 27 scarves that were mailed to the World War II Museum in New Orleans as part of the Knit Your Bit campaign. These scarves are distributed to veterans' centers, hospitals and service organizations nationwide.
