The Arlington Police Department has made an arrest in connection to the shooting death of 51-year-old Ricardo Oliveros.

Following a thorough and complex investigation, APD Homicide detectives obtained a warrant for the arrest of 25-year-old Rondre Mayberry on one count of Murder. Mr. Mayberry is currently serving a five-year prison sentence at a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility in Abilene for an unrelated 2024 conviction.

On February 13, 2024, at approximately 10:38 p.m., APD officers responded to the 2200 block of Remynse Drive after a passerby reported seeing a man lying on the ground near a pickup truck. The officers located the man, who was later identified as Mr. Oliveros, and discovered that he’d been shot. Mr. Oliveros was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased from his injuries.

Surveillance footage from a nearby school showed Mr. Oliveros pulling up to the scene in his pickup truck and stopping along Remynse Drive. The suspect, who was on foot, then walks up to the vehicle. Moments later, the suspect fires a shot and takes off running. Additional surveillance footage from a nearby business captured the suspect fleeing the area heading northbound. Following the shooting, Mr. Oliveros exited the vehicle and collapsed on the ground.

Investigators recovered a shell casing from the crime scene that was entered into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), a national database law enforcement agencies can access to help generate investigative leads from ballistics evidence. In June, detectives were alerted to a NIBIN hit on the shell casing.

They learned that on June 8, 2024, APD Patrol officers responded to an apartment complex in the 2900 block of Forest Hollow Lane to investigate reports that someone had displayed a gun during a verbal argument. Officers located that individual, who was identified as Mr. Mayberry, and arrested him for Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon, Resisting Arrest, and Violating a Protective Order. They also recovered the handgun he had been carrying.

APD personnel later conducted a test fire of the handgun and entered ballistics evidence from the test fire into NIBIN for further analysis. The shell casing recovered from the murder scene was a match to the gun recovered from Mr. Mayberry.

Detectives attempted to interview Mr. Mayberry about the murder, but he declined to speak with them and requested an attorney.

While conducting additional investigation into Mr. Mayberry, detectives learned he was also pulled over by an APD Motorcycle officer in January 2024 and issued a traffic citation. During that traffic stop, Mr. Mayberry provided the officer with his cell phone number. Homicide detectives used that information to obtain a search warrant for cell phone records associated with the number. Once the data was returned, APD Crime Analysts mapped out the locations where the phone number pinged during the timeframe of the murder. When compared to the timestamp in the surveillance video, the cell phone data showed that Mr. Mayberry’s phone pinged at the crime scene approximately one minute before the shot was fired.

Additionally, his cell phone pinged at locations just north of the crime scene following the shooting, which is consistent with the surveillance footage showing the suspect fleeing northbound.

“This case truly took a team effort to solve,” said Chief of Police Al Jones. “Had it not been for the outstanding and meticulous police work conducted by our Homicide Unit, Patrol Bureau, Traffic Division, and Crime Analyst Unit, we would not be in the position to file criminal charges in this case and to provide justice to Mr. Olivero’s family. I’m incredibly proud of their dedication and efforts.”

A motive for the shooting remains unclear. Detectives have not been able to determine a connection between Mr. Oliveros and Mr. Mayberry.
