The Texas Rangers hosted a reception Monday to honor the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation's Richard Greene Scholars Program, which was awarded the 2018 Allan H. Selig Award for Philanthropic Excellence from Major League Baseball in November. The Richard Greene Scholars Program, named after former Arlington Mayor Richard Greene, was created as a sign of the Rangers appreciation of the city and citizens of Arlington for their support of the Rangers and the vote for what is currently Globe Life Park. Over the past 22 years, the program has provided more than $1.2 million in college scholarships for more than 126 Arlington ISD students. Equally as impactful is the internship the Scholars participate in during their senior years of high school that includes work at the City of Arlington, Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce, River Legacy, Arlington ISD, and more. Richard Greene and his wife, Sylvia, joined by a number of former Greene scholars, were also honored for the Scholars Program at Monday's reception. The Allan H. Selig Award for Philanthropic Excellence was created in 2010 to recognize the charitable and philanthropic efforts of Major League Baseball clubs. The Rangers were the eighth MLB team to be so honored with Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred presenting the award to Co-Chairman and Managing Partner Ray Davis and Chief Operating Officer Neil Leibman at the MLB quarterly Owners Meetings in November.
