Lunar New Year

Join the Arlington Public Library as we celebrate Lunar New Year! Lunar New Year—also known as Spring Festival—is observed by many countries around the world.

This year, the Arlington Public Library will commemorate the holiday with a festival followed by a series of programs in the following weeks. These programs aim to highlight and celebrate the traditions surrounding the holiday.

Lunar New Year Celebration

Saturday, Jan. 21, East Library and Recreation Center, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Celebrate Lunar New Year with the Library! We will have arts and crafts, games, and special performances.

Homeschool Monday and Thursday

Monday, Jan. 23, Southwest Branch Library, 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Thursday, Jan. 26, Downtown Library, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Calling all homeschoolers! Homeschool Monday and Homeschool Thursday are opportunities to make new friends and learn something new. We will have a special feature for Lunar New Year.

Discover STEAM

Thursday, Jan. 26, Southeast Branch, 4- 5:30 p.m.

Do you enjoy trying new activities that incorporate science, technology, art, engineering, or math?  Then Discover STEAM is for you! We will have an activity available for school-age children during program hours, every other Thursday.  Activities will range from binary code painting, making a marble maze, building a catapult, designing your own board game, and more! These activities are designed for children aged 5 and up with some parent help.

Lunar New Year Storytime

Wednesday, Feb. 1, Downtown Library, 10-10:30 a.m.

Baby Time is an opportunity for baby and caregiver to learn together in a calm, gentle environment. This lap-sit storytime includes reading short books, singing, movement, sign language, and rhymes. Caregivers will learn new songs and tips on how to help their child love reading and learning at home. This storytime will feature Lunar New Year.

The program is 30-45 minutes long and is intended for pre-walking babies. Please bring a blanket to lay baby on during the program.

Lunar New Year: Chinese Calligraphy

Saturday, Feb. 4, Downtown Library, 2:30-4 p.m.

As part of our celebration for Lunar New Year, come learn some Chinese calligraphy! Learn some of the basic strokes and how to write some of the characters that are often displayed during Lunar New Year.

This program is appropriate for 13+. Materials will be provided.
