Did you know May is National Preservation Month? It started as National Preservation Week in by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1973 and was expanded to the whole month of May in 2005. The event is celebrated by local preservation groups, State historical societies, business and civic organizations across the country – and Arlington is proud to participate!

During the month of May events across the country are planned to promote historic places for the purpose of instilling national and community pride, promoting heritage tourism, and showing the social and economic benefits of historic preservation. Thousands of people participate in Preservation Month celebrations each year!

This year’s events are co-sponsored by the City’s Landmark Preservation Commission and the Arlington Historical Society. Each week we will take a deeper look into specific areas of Arlington’s history that has made it the American Dream City it is today. Be on the lookout for stories, social media posts, photos, and video of some of Arlington’s most important historical landmarks throughout the month and mark your calendars for some fun events listed below.

  • May 4 – Wanda Marshall Day Proclamation at City Council Meeting (6:30 p.m.)
  • May 8 – WWII Memorial Dedication Ceremony in City Center Plaza (10 a.m.)
  • May 18 – Historic Preservation Month Proclamation at City Council Meeting (6:30 p.m.)
  • May 20 – Jambo’s BBQ Celebration of the 90th Anniversary of Triangle Inn/Arlington Steakhouse Building (oldest continually operated restaurant in Arlington)

You can help celebrate by sharing our content with friends and family or maybe brushing up on your Arlington History with a visit to the Fielder House Museum, Knapp Heritage Park, the Arlington Heritage Memorial Grounds, or the genealogy section of the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library.
