The Arlington Police Department is investigating an early morning fatality crash along I-20 that caused the interstate to be shut down for hours.

On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at approximately 12:39 a.m., officers responded to the eastbound lanes of I-20 near E. Loop 820 after multiple drivers called 911 to report they may have struck a person who was in the roadway.

When officers arrived on scene, they found the remains of an adult male. At this time, the department has been unable to identify him.

It appears the man was a passenger in a vehicle that got into a wreck shortly before he was struck.

Investigators believe a 2008 Buick Lucerne was traveling eastbound along I-20 when it swerved and hit a road construction barricade on the left side of the highway. This caused the driver to lose control of the car, travel across all lanes of traffic, and strike a concrete barrier on the right side of the highway. While the vehicle was crossing over to the right, the front passenger door of the Lucerne opened and the victim came out of the vehicle, landing in the roadway.

He was then hit by multiple vehicles. None of the drivers who hit him are facing criminal charges.

The driver of the Lucerne was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

I-20 was shut down for most of the morning through the area while officers investigated the incident and hazmat crews cleaned the roadway. All lanes of I-20 reopened at approximately 10:30 a.m.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the deceased once he has been positively identified and next of kin notified.
