The City of Arlington has named Alex Whiteway as the new director of Arlington Water Utilities.

Whiteway has worked for the City of Mansfield’s Water Utilities Department for the past two decades and most recently served as the department’s assistant director since 2018. He will begin his career with the City of Arlington on June 17, 2024.

“I've been in this industry for 20 years, and coming from a neighboring city, I have had the opportunity to work with City of Arlington staff. I've always been passionate about public service, and I am excited to join a strong team of talented individuals in one of the largest cities in Texas,” Whiteway said.

Whiteway worked his way up from his start as a tradesperson on the City of Mansfield’s wastewater crew to field operations leadership roles and ultimately the assistant director role. He holds various licenses, including the highest certification as a Class A Water Operator. As assistant director for Mansfield’s Water Utilities, he oversaw a $42 million budget, a team of 55 full-time employees and numerous capital projects.

Throughout his career, Whiteway said he has always prioritized examining new technologies to ensure that residents were receiving the highest quality of service possible.

“I'm looking forward to identifying how I can contribute my own skills and experience in this new role to not only maintain, but elevate, the already outstanding level of service and culture of excellence that the City of Arlington's Water Utilities Department provides to its residents,” he said.

Like Mansfield, Arlington is served by the Tarrant Regional Water District and the Trinity River Authority. City Manager Trey Yelverton said Whiteway’s experience with these regional water suppliers, his leadership roles in the state water industry, his successful career track in Mansfield and the investment in his professional development made him an ideal candidate to lead Arlington Water Utilities.

Whiteway earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology and a master’s degree in public administration from The University of Texas at Arlington. He served as board chairman of the Texas Water Utilities Association Board in 2022 and 2023 and his professional certifications include Class A Water Operator, Certified Water Professional, Wastewater Collection III, Licensed Irrigator, Customer Service Inspector, and Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester.

Public Works Director Keith Brooks has served as the acting director since former Arlington Water Utilities Director Craig Cummings’ retirement in 2023.
