The Arlington Animal Services Center (AASC) is launching a new Black History Volunteer Team giving Arlington students the opportunity to live, laugh and learn about animals. The focus group includes students in grades 7-12. The deadline to apply for this program is April 1, 2014.

Members of the new Black History Volunteer Team will spend some time researching the contributions that African Americans have made to American history in their struggles for freedom and equality from a list of books provided by Animal Services Manager, Chris Huff.

In January 2015, each student will present a 10-minute presentation based on a book read about a black history icon. All books must be selected from the pre-approved list.

In addition to the presentation, team members will be required to volunteer four hours per month at the AASC. The student will provide care for one foster pet and see the pet through the adoption process or participate in one Golden PAWS Senior Citizen volunteer project.

AASC is looking forward to partnering with Cool Jazz Forever on this amazing new project. "This will add an educational and volunteer component at Arlington Animal Services that focuses on youth at an especially impressionable age." "Animals teach us so much about life and we are in hopes of creating a program the students will remember to carry with them for the rest of their lives," said Chris Huff.

The top three winners selected from the presenters and those individuals completing the program will be recognized during a reception scheduled before the 2015 Black History Month program hosted by the Arlington Public Library. The first place winner will receive $500, second place wins $400 and third place will win $300.

Here's how to apply:

Step 1: Email Chris Huff with the subject line "Black History Volunteer Team" [email protected]

Step 2: Complete the volunteer process at webapps.arlingtontx.gov/tmp/volunteer/animals.html

Step 3: Interview and approval provided during a special scheduled orientation by Huff.

After completion of this program, each student will receive a certificate of completion and a letter of recommendation.
