A thrill-seeking pig named Bacon has been reunited with its owner after catching the attention of some alert Arlington police officers.

"We got an animal ordinance call at 11 a.m. Friday morning and officers responded to a residence in East Arlington to find a pot-bellied pig rooting around in the garage," said Officer Zhivonni McDonnell, social media coordinator with the Arlington Police Department (APD). "The resident thought he knew where the pig lived, so officers checked that residence, but it was incorrect."

A representative from Arlington Animal Services, who had also responded to the call, then took the pig, named Bacon, to the City's Animal Services Center until the owner could be located or came in to claim the pig.

Thinking that she could help the reunion along, Officer McDonnell then turned to the tool that, as a social media expert, she knows best.

"We took pictures of Bacon and pushed them out on the department's Facebook and Twitter feeds on Monday."Initially, because of the unusual nature of the story, the posts caught the eye of local media outlets and they were calling APD within the hour.

"Then I saw where a friend of Bacon's owner, Sandy Jimenez, responded that her friend was the owner," McDonnell said. "I contacted Sandy's mother and it was, in fact, her pet pig Bacon."

Jimenez and Bacon were reunited on Tuesday afternoon.

APD typically uses its Facebook and Twitter feeds to reach out to the public for assistance with identifying suspects or follow up on criminal activity tips. Recently, they have also begun using it for their Forever Fridays pet adoption campaign where an officer poses with an adoptable animal every Friday.

"So far, we're four for four," said McDonnell.
