 Ashore for Repairs

Chester Ditto Golf Course in North Arlington has been the home of "The Sea" for a number of years. The piece was completed by sculpture, Otello Guarducci, (1922-2012) in 1980.

Currently, the artwork is in need of restoration and has been transported to Schaeffer Art Bronze Casting on Collins Street in Downtown Arlington.

"Since it was completed in 1980, the sculpture needs some structural repairs such as rust removal and a new coat of paint. A few decades of being in the Texas weather have taken its toll on the steel sculpture," Arlington Parks and Recreation Director Lemuel Randolph said. "Once repairs are completed, a new coat of paint will be added to the sculpture. With renovation plans at Chester Ditto Golf Course under consideration, it seems an appropriate time to relocate the artwork. "

The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department is nearing completion of a master plan which could be implemented within the next few years. These renovations would cause the sculpture to be relocated. The Arlington City Council is scheduled to receive a presentation about the golf course renovation in fall 2014.

The sculpture is slated to be relocated to the Meadowbrook Park Sculpture Garden. This park is currently home to two pieces of art: the "Blue Sky Dream" and "Dragonflies" pieces. "The Sea" could be placed by the end of this year. The Meadowbrook Park Sculpture Garden is part of a larger master plan trail that begins at the Arlington Convention Center and extends south to Meadowbrook Park. The trail, in its completion, will consist of more than 20 sculptures.
