Every October, thousands of schools across the nation and around the world come together to celebrate International Walk to School Day. The Arlington Police Department joined forces with Berry Elementary School to show support for the annual event on October 9, 2013. Students, teachers and families rallied at a designated starting point to participate. Students made posters and banners to show their support and encourage others to join in on the walk.
Since 1997, schools from all over the country have joined together to promote walking to school as an alternative for driving. "International Walk to School Day encourages students and families to have fun, build healthier habits and unite the community to create a safe, clean, environment for their neighborhoods." Students and families get the chance to see how walking to and from school can benefit their health with extra physical activity.
Arlington Deputy Police Chief Os Flores, who also participated in the walk, said today's event helps to reduce traffic congestion and pollution. Additionally, it provides support for infrastructure improvements, and boosts neighborhood connections.
Arlington ISD Superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos, Deputy Chief Flores, Lt. Christopher Cook, Officer Zhivonni McDonnell, and Officer Stephanie Muguerza had a great time walking with Berry Elementary students this morning.
