Have you ever wondered what happens to the items you return to Amazon, Walmart and other companies? These items are sold in online auctions, and businesses like Hot Deals on Pioneer Parkway in Arlington, can purchase these items to sell at a much lower price.
After the COVID-19 pandemic, Hot Deals owners Majdi Ghanim and Manal Yamin, had to change directions like many others during that time. They decided to open the discount store, Hot Deals, buying pallets of return items to sell at a discounted rate.
“There’s nothing like this in Arlington, so we decided to open our store here because the city needed something like this,” Ghanim emphasized. “That way shoppers have something affordable nearby and don’t have to drive 20 to 30 minutes to Duncanville or another city for deals.”
Ghanim and Yamin, never know the specific items they are going to receive. They buy a certain number of pallets or a truck load, and the rest is left up to chance. In the past they have received air fryers, microwaves and more.
“Every week is a different thing. On Fridays we place out our new items for $8. Whatever doesn’t sell goes down to $6 on Saturday, and then $4 on Sunday,” Ghanim explained. “It keeps going down until we start all over again on Friday. But I wouldn’t wait, a lot of these items are gone on Friday. People start lining up around the building before we open.”
On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., Hot Deals offers a raffle drawing for bigger ticket items, like sofas or tables, depending on what is available that week.
Hot Deals also sells some higher priced items like furniture, vacuums, and Nespresso coffee makers. You can visit the Hot Deals Facebook page to see the different items they are selling each week. Or you can visit the One Start Development Center, on the second floor at City Hall from September 25 - 29, 2023, during Small Business Promotion week. The City’s Planning and Development Service Department is also hosting Customer Appreciation Week during the same time and will be providing refreshments and bottled water for the customers visiting the Small Business Promotion table.
The City of Arlington is highlighting minority-owned and/or women-owned small businesses throughout 2023. Canales Furniture, another Small Business of Arlington, who has grown substantially in the last few years, wants to give back to the community and is sponsoring this program with the Planning & Development Services Department for the year 2023. In their new headquarters at 102 E. I-20 Highway, they have dedicated a training room for their growing community, including free English-speaking classes, citizenship classes, and teaching small businesses on how to utilize social media as a marketing tool.
