The Arlington Veterans Park Foundation will host an inaugural Memorial Day Service, something the group hopes will become an annual public tradition, in Veterans Park at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 27, 2024.

The ceremony will be held at the Memorial to the Fallen, a monument inside Veterans Parks that was dedicated on Veterans Day in November 2023. Veteran Park is located at 3600 W. Arkansas Lane.

Veterans Day honors all who have served in our military, while Memorial Day honors those who have died while defending our country and its values. The Arlington Veterans Park Foundation said the mood of its service will focus on the sacrifice and patriotism of the fallen.

The Memorial to the Fallen monument honors the 110 young men from Arlington who died in our country’s wars of the 20th and 21st centuries. Among those names are Colonel Neel E. Kearby, who received the Medal of Honor for his actions as an Army Air Force fighter pilot in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, and Preston F. McKee, an early Arlington mayor who died during World War I.

The first Memorial Day service will include remarks from U.S.N. Chaplain Rich Stoglin, who has performed the duty of informing Gold Star families of the loss of their loved ones. Arlington Mayor Jim Ross, a Marine Corps veteran, will address attendees.

A significant part of the ceremony will be laying a wreath at the Memorial to the Fallen. Foundation officials will provide flowers to Gold Star family members to place in the wreath after it is in place. The University of Texas at Arlington’s Maverick Battalion will present the colors and Arlington Community Band will perform patriotic music.
