Explore Arlington: Walmart Donates $25,000 Toy Shopping Spree to Help Arlington Families This Christmas
Volunteers filled dozens of Walmart shopping baskets with stuffed animals, bikes and tricycles, trucks and dolls and other colorful toys on Friday morning to help Arlington families in need this Christmas.
The shopping spree was made possible by the Walmart in Arlington’s Entertainment District, which donated $25,000 worth of toys to be given to the local Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots branch. A crew of volunteers, which including Mayor Jim Ross, City Council members Long Pham, Rebecca Boxall and Nikkie Hunter, Arlington Renegades football players, Texas Veterans Day Parade organizers, and Arlington firefighters, selected thousands of items during the shopping trip.
Mayor Ross, a grandfather, said toy shopping is not a new experience for him. But being able to pick out toys that will be donated and provided to Arlington children this month will be a special memory.
“It’s exciting because this is how our community comes together to take care of families in need. It is Arlington families who are going to be taken care of this Christmas with these toys,” Ross said, before lifting a child’s bike into his shopping basket.
Ross said Walmart has been a wonderful partner to the Arlington community. Earlier this year, the store provided a $25,000 gift to support the inaugural Texas Veterans Day Parade, which was held Nov. 11 in the Entertainment District. The store also made the commitment of support to the Dallas County and City of Arlington Toys for Tots branch, which received more than 500 toy donations during the Texas Veterans Day Parade.
