Outdoor Recycling Containers Removed from Library Locations Because of Illegal Dumping Issues
Because of chronic issues caused by illegal dumping, the City will no longer offer outdoor recycling containers for community recycling needs at Arlington Public Library branches. This change in service, which aims to maintain the cleanliness of our City facilities and surrounding neighborhoods, will begin Oct. 1, 2024.
Signage is posted on the large containers about what materials are acceptable, yet the recycling materials inside the bins regularly has to be disposed of in the landfill because they have been contaminated by garbage or non-recyclable items. This has included electronics, furniture, food, plastic bags and foam packing materials, clothing, and construction materials. These are the same types of items that are also frequently left scattered on the ground around the containers, which leads to litter blowing into medians and storm drains and requires additional cleanup by collection crews.
Curbside Recycling at Home
Residents are encouraged to cut large cardboard boxes down so they can fit inside their recycling cart. Cardboard boxes that are too large to place in the cart must be flattened and placed next to the trash and recycle cart(s) to be collected as bulk waste, which is not recycled.
Multi-Family Recycling
If you are an apartment tenant, please contact your apartment management about recycling options that may be available to you. All multi-family complexes built in Arlington after 2018 are required to have a recycling plan, per the City’s Multi-Family Recycling Ordinance.
