Did you know that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths? Keeping in mind a few safety guidelines will help prevent most heating fires. In our latest Ask Arlington, Arlington Fire Lt. Jasiel Zapata provides some tips that can help keep you and your family safe during cold weather.
Should there be an increase in fire safety during the winter months?
Lt. Zapata: “Yes, the NFPA reports that half of our home heating fires occur during the months of December, January, and February. Heating equipment such as fireplaces, wood stoves, and portable space heaters can present dangers and cause fires.”
What safety precautions can I take to avoid home fires when using portable heaters?
Lt. Zapata: “Keep all items that could burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment as well as your pets and children. Have your equipment inspected and repaired by qualified professionals according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Always use the appropriate fuel source specified by the equipment’s manufacturer. Remember to always turn off portable heaters if you are leaving the room or will be going to bed, and never use your oven to heat your home.”
What additional safety guidelines should I follow?
Lt. Zapata: “Make sure to have properly installed and working smoke detectors inside your home. You should also have properly installed and working carbon monoxide detectors. If you smell gas do not light the appliance, leave the home immediately and call 911 or your gas provider. You can purchase a smoke detector at one of your local stores or request a free smoke detector through the American Red Cross website or in person at one of its events.”
People that live in a home are eligible for a smoke alarm (Apartments are responsible for their units). On average, the American Red Cross installs three smoke alarms per home. Currently, the Arlington Fire Department is the only organization/agency that is partnered with the American Red Cross in Arlington to put in smoke alarms due to COVID-19 concerns.
Families residing in large multifamily locations should communicate with their property management for assistance with their smoke alarms.
