Several Mansfield ISD students competed in one of the most rigorous academic competitions on the state level and came home with medals in their categories.
The Academic Decathlon is a ten-event scholastic competition in which students compete in seven multiple-choice exams, an essay, an interview and a speech. The state competition was held Feb. 25-27 in Frisco.
Lake Ridge High School’s team won second place in the Super Quiz category. The Super Quiz is one highlighted event out of the subjects and is always a special topic in relations to the theme. Team members for Lake Ridge High are Bisola Okunola, Samantha Wren, Kaley Ngo, John Dunlap, Susannah Stevenson, Ethan Beard, Isaac Kosloski, Austin Turner and Jasmine Nguyen.
In addition to the team medal, Dunlap won the gold in scholastic music, literature and social science. He also won a bronze medal overall and received a $1,000 scholarship.
Mansfield High School’s team advanced to state for the first time since 2002 and took home hardware. The team tied for third place in Super Quiz. The team members are Jasmine Thomas, Johnathan Dang, Dylan Luong, Cole Kincade, Jackson Harris, Ethan Angel and Jacob Dotson. Individually, Dang came in first place in economics and second place in art. Thomas earned a bronze in speech.
Summit High School had two students medal at the state competition. Khaliah Weems won a silver medal in scholastic interview. Zack Rieter won a bronze medal in the same category.
The Academic Decathlon coaches for Lake Ridge High School are Brandon Austin and Don Counts. Summit High School’s team is led by Angela Guthrie and Michael Santanello. Mansfield High’s team coach is Tanya Maness.
Hundreds of teams competed at the state academic decathlon meet and have the chance to earn scholarship money. Region and state contests are held for schools categorized as large, medium and small. Based on a point system, the highest-scoring team represents the state at the national United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) competition
