Rendering of a new playground planned for High Oak Park in Arlington.

A new playground is coming to High Oak Park in North Arlington.

Construction began Tuesday, Jan. 28 at the 12-acre neighborhood park at 2635 Wesley Drive, located near Division Street and North Bowen Road. The High Oak Park, dedicated by the City in 2014, currently features a natural area, picnic area, and a concrete hike and bike trail.

In October 2024, the Arlington City Council approved a $776,000 construction contract with C. Green Scaping, LP, of Fort Worth, for a new playground area, a water drinking fountain, a concrete sidewalk, benches, shade sails and wildflower seeding, irrigation and solar-powered security lights. The new playground will feature artificial turf safety surfacing, a swing set, a play unit designed for 2-5 year olds and a play unit designed for 5-12 year olds, benches, shade structures and irrigation upgrades.

The improvements, approved by Arlington voters in the 2018 bond election, are expected to be complete by June 1.

The City of Arlington’s Office of Business Diversity placed a 24.38% contract-specific goal for MWBE participation for this project. C. Green Scaping, LP, which is an MWBE firm, will exceed this goal as both a prime contractor as well as through the use of MWBE sub-contractors.

High Oak Park History

The High Oak Park site was previously occupied by the High Oak Terrace Apartments, a 132-unit complex built in 1970. In 2003, the complex failed city and federal inspections, and the tenants were relocated. After the complex owners defaulted on their loan, the City of Arlington purchased the High Oak Terrace Apartments in August 2004 with HUD funding, relocated the remaining tenants, and demolished the substandard complex with the goal to replacing it with single family, owner-occupied housing. Due to the decline in the housing market, however, the City decided in 2011 to forego new housing as previously proposed and repurpose the property as a neighborhood park. A master plan for the neighborhood park was developed with input from the community.
