The Arlington Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, resulting in the death of a man in his early 30s.
At approximately 1:03 a.m., officers were dispatched to a motel in the 900 block of N. Collins Street for a disturbance call. The 911 caller reported that an unknown man was banging on motel room doors and causing a loud disturbance.
Two officers arrived on the scene and located a motel room where they could hear a disturbance and a voice yelling for help. The officers announced themselves outside the motel room before gaining entry. Inside, they saw two men engaged in a physical altercation. One man had what appeared to be cuts on his arm, and the suspect was still holding a knife.
Officers gave multiple commands for the suspect to drop the knife, but he refused and continued to fight with the victim. Both officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect. The preliminary investigation indicates that the victim and the suspect did not know each other.
Following the shooting, officers rendered first aid to the suspect until paramedics arrived. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will release his name. The victim was also transported to a hospital, where he was treated and released.
No officers were injured during the incident.
As is standard procedure anytime an officer discharges their service weapon, two investigations are currently underway:
- A criminal investigation led by the APD Homicide Unit, which will review the incident to determine if any criminal offenses were committed
- An administrative investigation led by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, which will determine whether the officers followed department policies and procedures.
Per department policy, both officers have been placed on administrative leave.
