The next time you shop online or in-store for groceries, the Arlington Life Shelter hopes you consider adding an extra tube of toothpaste, stick of deodorant or other basic household and hygiene necessities to your cart to help the nonprofit organization continue to make a difference in the lives of others.

The recently expanded shelter launched its inaugural Stock the Shelter campaign this summer as part of its mission to fight homelessness in our community and help put families and individuals on the path to self-sustainability. The shelter recently increased its capacity from 85 residents to 95 residents and is striving to be able to serve as many as 120 individuals by the end of this summer, Development Manager Elizabeth Hammond said.

To do so, the shelter is calling on the community for critical support. During the campaign, which began on June 6 and will continue through July 23, residents are encouraged to donate much-needed supplies for shelter clients, including items such as garbage bags, paper products, toothpaste/toothbrushes, deodorant and hair supplies. Items can be purchased through the shelter’s online Wishlist or bought locally and dropped off at 325 W. Division St. in Downtown Arlington.

“This shelter has been so well-supported by the Arlington community,” Hammond said. “It’s really something that a lot of people have never seen before. Anytime we ask, they deliver.”

Initially opening its doors to only homeless men in 1987, the Arlington Life Shelter has since expanded to women and children and has served over 805 clients. The shelter’s resources have also increased to include numerous services to those in need, including providing basic living needs such as cleaning supplies, bedding, and food. Clients can stay for an initial three days and then choose to enroll in a 90-day program.

The shelter also provides opportunities for both individuals and families to easily transition into better situations with job training and education. Adults are provided with vocational assessments, financial education, and job placement service while children are provided with enrollment in schooling and access to programs thanks to a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Tarrant County.
