On Sunday, November 7, 2021, at approximately 2:36 a.m., the Arlington Police Department responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of N Collins Street and the westbound I-30 service road.
Investigators believe the driver of a Hyundai Sonata, who was traveling southbound on N Collins Street, ran a red light and struck a Honda HRV that was traveling through the intersection, heading westbound along the I-30 service road.
Two backseat passengers in the HRV were transported to the hospital with very serious injuries. One of them, a 37-year-old male, was later pronounced deceased by medical staff. The driver of the HRV suffered minor injuries. Investigators learned he was providing rideshare service to the backseat passengers at the time.
The driver of the Sonata, 50-year-old Bernida Collins, was also transported to the hospital. Based on evidence gathered at the scene and their interactions with her, investigators believe she was intoxicated. Officers obtained a search warrant for her blood and a blood draw was completed. She will be charged with one count of Intoxication Manslaughter and one count of Intoxication Assault with a Vehicle Causing Serious Bodily Injury.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the deceased once next of kin have been notified.
