This year, the Arlington Public Library is offering Arlington citizens two options to receive free help preparing their taxes.
VITA, a program through the United Way of Tarrant County, is available at our East Library and Recreation Center location. Appointment dates are Jan. 26 through April 15, 2021. Appointment times are from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. This program is only available to citizens whose annual household income is less than $60,000. To schedule your appointment, please call VITA at (817) 575-3947.
The Library is also partnering with AARP to provide tax preparation assistance services at the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library. AARP appointments begin Feb. 1 and run through April 15, 2021. Appointment days are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year the service is drop off/pick up, and preparers ask that you follow the process below:
Two-Step Scan and Pick-Up:
- Participants will schedule an appointment to bring in their documents for scanning by Tax-Aide volunteers at the library.
- Scanned documents will be prepared remotely by a volunteer tax preparer. There is no tax preparation on site this year.
- The participant will return to the library at a specified time and date (a week later) to pick up their prepared taxes.
Patrons can schedule their appointment at the 1st-floor service desk in the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library. Once patrons have scheduled an appointment, they will be given an intake booklet to complete before coming to their first appointment. This is to make sure participants are bringing all the necessary documents for scanning. If you arrive for an appointment without completing the booklet and without the necessary documents, you will have to rebook for a later date and come back with everything completed.
While Library staff cannot offer financial or legal advice, they're glad to help residents find information.
