Arlington Police Department Awarded IACP Leadership in Human and Civil Rights Award
The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) selected the Arlington Police Department as the recipient of the prestigious Leadership in Human and Civil Rights Award during the 126th Annual Conference and Exposition. Police Chief Will Johnson was on hand to formally receive the award on behalf of the entire department on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019.
The IACP Leadership in Human and Civil Rights Award recognizes agencies who have demonstrated leadership in protecting fundamental rights. This award showcases the achievements of agencies in protecting and promoting human and civil rights to enhance public trust and maintain cooperation and partnerships with communities.
“This award represents the exceptional work to provide procedural justice and equal protection under the law to our community every single day,” said Police Chief Will Johnson. “I am honored to lead this progressive agency that is always striving to do things better and expand our partnerships throughout the city.”
The Arlington Police Department has enhanced its hate crime reporting protocols and hosted specialized training programs for prosecutors, officers and civilian investigators to bolster the department’s responses to hate crimes and incidents. Officers also attend a mandatory 8-hour training course on hate crimes during the current 2019 training cycle. This has positioned the department to enhance responses and reporting to these incidents and crimes which cause significant community harm.
