Dance and movement highlight the work of local artist, Donray, in the new "Artist in Motion" exhibit at the Arlington Museum of Art.

Costumes from Dance Theatre Arlington and the Texas Ballet Theater meticulously accompany Donray's work on all four floors of the museum and piece together a display of creatures and fictional characters.

Donray said he did not have much exposure to the arts as a child, but remembered his family having season tickets to a symphony, which influenced his merge of fine art and theatre.

Along with dance and movement, many of Donray's works incorporate something else in common - vibrant color.

"I usually go for maximum intensity," Donray said. "That's what I'm looking for."

For this reason, Donray often uses complementary colors.

However, he said integrating color is a difficult task when starting a piece, and depends on what looks right to him.

"The Moor of Venice," one of Donray's paintings in the exhibit, showcases saturated hues of red, green and blue in a glossed-over finish Donray created with a process he called his broken glass technique.

In this process, the application and manipulation of acrylic paint is important.

"You have to let acrylics be acrylics and work on them in layers," he said.

One thing onlookers can't avoid is the dance captured in the exhibition.

"It's interesting and different," said Arlington resident Micheal Mackey, who visited the exhibit with his sister-in-law Kate Kane. "I wasn't expecting this."

Kane said she was most impressed with the costumes and how detailed and finished they looked.

Mackey said he and Kane have an eclectic taste and were pleasantly surprised by the exhibition.

The Arlington Museum of Art is located on 201 W. Main St. The "Artist in Motion" exhibit runs though February 16. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Individuals may contact the museum at (817) 275-4600.
