National Flood Insurance Program or NFIP is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). It provides flood insurance to nearly 20,000 communities across the United States and its territories that participate in the NFIP. These communities voluntarily participate in the NFIP by adopting and enforcing floodplain management ordinances that meet or exceed FEMA requirements to reduce the risk of future flood damage. In exchange, the NFIP makes federally backed flood insurance available to homeowners, renters, and business owners in these communities.
Because the City of Arlington participates in the NFIP program, flood insurance is available for all commercial and residential properties in the City of Arlington. Owners of these properties are eligible for building and content coverage. Content coverage is also available to residents who rent homes, apartments, condominiums, or business properties.
Flood insurance is designed to provide an alternative to disaster assistance and to reduce the escalating costs of repairing damage to buildings and their contents caused by floods. In addition to providing flood insurance and reducing flood damages through floodplain management regulations, the NFIP identifies and maps the Nation’s floodplains. Mapping flood hazards creates broad-based awareness of the flood hazards and provides the data needed for floodplain management programs to actuarial rate new construction for flood insurance. Contact the Stormwater Management Division to determine your flood risk at 817-459-6550.
Remember it takes 30 days for a policy to become effective so don't delay purchasing coverage for your property.
The City of Arlington also participates in the NFIP’s Community Rating System (CRS). This voluntary program was created to help communities reduce flood insurance costs for their homeowners, renters and business owners while implementing floodplain management strategies to reduce flood risk. Because of the City’s participation in the CRS program, Arlington property owners and tenets receive a 25% discount on their flood insurance premiums. Visit our Community Rating System page for more information about the City’s CRS program.
