A recently completed Arlington Water Utilities project in southwest Arlington will improve water service reliability for residents in the Sterling Green neighborhood and The Oaks at Arlington private community.

Starting in February, field operations crews from Arlington Water installed 1,000 feet of 8-inch water main in parallel to an existing 16-inch water transmission main along West Sublett Road, between South Bowen Road and S.J. Stovall Park. To decrease disruptions to traffic and other day-to-day activities, the new main was installed using horizontal drilling equipment.

In late August 2019, break and subsequent emergency repairs on a 20-inch water main at the nearby intersection of Calender Road and West Sublett Road emphasized the need for a secondary way to get water to the Sterling Green and Oaks at Arlington neighborhoods. The new 8-inch water main, which was designed in-house by an Arlington Water Utilities engineer, creates a redundancy that allows the neighborhoods to maintain water service when maintenance is being performed on the 16-inch water main. It will also increase reliability of water service if there is a water main break along the 16-inch main.

The project was completed entirely in-house by the water department and the new line was put into service in mid-March.
