Preventing stormwater pollution is a year-round concern in our community. In the winter months, rain can turn to snow or ice which can accumulate pollutants. When snow and ice thaw, pollutants are dumped into our storm drainage system. These materials are then discharged to our local waterways depleting oxygen levels, harming aquatic organisms and their habitats, and clogging our storm drain system.

Join the City of Arlington’s Stormwater Education Specialist on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021, at the Southeast Branch Library, 900 SE Green Oaks Blvd, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. to learn about stormwater pollution and its effects on our local water quality. Polluted stormwater runoff impacts our local waterways during the winter just as much as it does in the spring and summer months. This presentation will provide information on common stormwater pollutants and prevention solutions for our residents.

Protect Arlington’s Waterways by following these tips:

  • Winterize your vehicles by checking for oil and other fluid leaks.  Repair leaks quickly and properly clean fluids up.
  • Wash your vehicles over grassy areas or at your local car wash.
  • Use alternative deicing chemicals such as calcium chloride, Potassium acetate or calcium magnesium acetate.
  • Remove leaves and other yard waste from your street.  Never blow leaves and yard waste into the storm drain.
  • When using deicing material or lawn chemicals remove excess from sidewalks and streets.  Never apply chemicals when there is rain, ice or snow forecasted.
