More than 80 student-athletes and their families gathered at the Mansfield ISD Center for the Performing Arts Wednesday to celebrate the decision to continue playing at the collegiate level with a scholarship offer. Parts of Arlington are in the Mansfield school district.
Student-athletes from Lake Ridge High School, Legacy High School, Mansfield High School, Summit High School and Timberview High School attended the district’s National Signing Day ceremony.
National Signing Day is held on the first Wednesday in February. It has traditionally been the first day a high school senior can sign a binding letter of intent to play at a school that is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Athletics Director Philip O’Neal said the event is a great way to showcase what MISD students are doing academically and athletically while displaying unity throughout the district.
“We have a couple of swimmers going to Alabama, we have football players going all over, we’ve got students going to Ivy League schools,” O'Neal said. “To be able to celebrate them with their parents and their coaches and their principals and their teachers and the athletic administration is just a fun deal for us.”
Early signing days were held in November and December. More letters of intent will be signed in April.
This is the fourth year Mansfield ISD has held a centralized event for all high school students who earned scholarships to play their sport in college.
