Arlington Water Utilties

A five-month-old partnership between the City of Arlington and City of Kennedale has earned a regional award from leaders in other North Texas communities.

Arlington Water Utilities began operating the water distribution and wastewater systems in Kennedale April 1 as part of a new contractual arrangement. The Regional Cooperation Award spotlighting the effort was announced in June at the 53rd Annual General Assembly of the North Central Texas Council of Governments. The annual award honors local governments that promote coordination and cooperation to solve regional problems, do not allow jurisdictional boundaries to be barriers to solutions, and demonstrate that joint projects can provide better use of resources as well as quality service.

As part of the operating agreement, Arlington is responsible for maintenance and routine repairs of the Kennedale water and sewer system, including water wells owned by Kennedale. Arlington also took over water quality testing in Kennedale that is required by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Arlington Water Utilities is working on plans for an interconnection between the two cities that will allow water from Arlington’s water treatment plants to be sold to the City of Kennedale for distribution. Arlington already has wholesale water sales agreements with the City of Dalworthington Gardens and Bethesda Water Supply Corp.
