In recognition of Women’s History Month, the Arlington Public Library will be hosting a variety of virtual and in-person events to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of women throughout ‘her’ story. In 1986 the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to declare March as Women’s History Month. Since then, the Library has celebrated women and all their contributions. In 2020, APL honored the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment. This year's theme is “Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to be Silenced.”

Upcoming Events:

  • Great Women Scavenger Hunt at Woodland West Branch

 Monday, March 15 – Friday, March 19

Families are encouraged to visit anytime during the week of March 15-19 to go on a hunt to discover interesting facts from the display. To participate, families can pick up a scavenger hunt form from the circulation desk. After completing the form, return for a fun sticker or other small prize. Click here to learn more.

  •  Cricut: WHM Stickers, George W. Hawkes Downtown Library

 Thursday, March 4, 4:30 p.m.

In this class, the Makerspace team will create stickers using the Cricut machine and Cricut software. Materials will be provided. Registration required.

  •  What about the Women? Overcoming Challenges to finding Female Ancestors (Virtual)

 Wednesday, March 24, 7 p.m.

Male ancestors typically kept their birth names their whole lives, could buy and sell property and enter into contracts, serve in the military, earn degrees, and were even listed as heads of households in census records. Female ancestors, well, not so much.

Join the APL Genealogy and Local History Librarian to discuss these and other challenges to finding the women in your family tree. Registration required.

  •  Shelf Check Podcast

New episodes will air every Saturday at 5 p.m. with discussions covering Women's History Month. Click here to learn more.
