What is rideshare?

Rideshare is a transportation option that uses a smartphone application and a fleet of rideshare vehicles to provide a service that has no fixed schedules, no fixed routes and an infinite number of on-demand stops. Passengers share their ride and save money.

How does it work?

Passengers can book a trip on a rideshare vehicle using the free Via app. Customers enter their pick-up and drop-off locations and a vehicle will pick them up within a block or two of their doorstep or a nearby location. Those who don’t have a smartphone to download the app can book a ride by phone at 817-784-7382.

What are the hours of operation?

The service is offered between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday. Via will provide riders advance notice on any holiday-related schedule changes.

What are the service areas?

The Via rideshare service area includes a significant portion of Arlington between Lamar Boulevard to the north, SH 360 and beyond to the east, the City limits to the south and Silo Road, Matlock Road or Fielder Road to the west. The Via service area also includes the CentrePort TRE Station.

What is the normal wait time to be picked up by a Via driver?

Customers are able to view estimated wait times when they enter their pick up and drop off locations in the Via app. Wait times will vary depending on nearby driver availability but generally should not exceed 10 to 12 minutes.

In order to keep up with demand for this popular rideshare service, Via added a few privately-owned vehicles to the fleet of Mercedes Metris passenger vans to transport customers in the Arlington service area. All contracted drivers still go through the same rigorous registration process as those who drive the Metris vans and their privately owned vehicles meet all City and state requirements. Via only plans to use non-Metris vehicles when the company does not have enough vehicles to meet demand.

How much will a ride cost?

A $3 flat per trip fee will be charged for each trip.

How do I pay?

Customers pay by credit card or prepaid card, which is entered when they set up an account. The card on file can be changed through the Via app, or by setting up an in-person appointment at 817-784-7382.

Can I pay with cash?

Via is primarily a cashless service. Don’t have a credit card? Visit a local dollar store or grocery store to purchase a pre-paid credit card with cash in the dollar amount of your choosing. Note that reloadable cards, such as American Express “Serve”, are preferable because they can be refilled when empty without requiring the purchase of a new card. Once you have your prepaid card, you can set up an account on your smart phone. If you do not have a smartphone, you can call Via at 817-784-7382, and they can make an appointment to meet you in-person and assist you.

I don’t have a smartphone to download the Via app. Can I still book a ride?

Via has a live support line at 817-784-7382. You can call that number to book a ride if you have already set up a Via account. If you do not have an account, you can call that number to speak with a Via representative to set up an account.

Will customers who use wheelchairs be able to use the Via service?

In addition to the fleet of six-passenger vans, Via also operates a limited number of wheelchair-accessible vehicles during the pilot program. While the Via vans typically pick up customers within a block or two of their location, the accessible vehicles will pick up customers at their doorstep as needed. Arlington’s Handitran is still an available option for those needing an accessible vehicle and door-to-door service.

How do I request an accessible Via vehicle?

Customers requiring a wheelchair accessible vehicle can go to the “Promo Codes” menu on the Via app and enter code RIDEWAV. Once this code is entered, the customer will be assigned an accessible vehicle each time he or she requests a ride.

I live outside the current Via service area. Will Via ever be available to my Arlington neighborhood?

Via Service Area

Service areas may shift over time as information is gathered about demand for service. Up-to-date service area maps and operating hours will always be available through the free Via app or the Via website at www.ridewithvia.com/arlington. Via encourages feedback and would love to hear from those needing rides outside of the current and planned services areas. Please feel free to send the Via team an email at support-arn@ridewithvia.com

Can I book a trip with Via to and from events in the Entertainment District that end after 9 p.m.?

Via service typically runs until 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday but it will offer extended hours for select special events in Arlington. Please check the app for ride availability to and from events ending after 9 p.m. in the Entertainment District.

How is Via rideshare different than traditional ride-hailing transportation services?

As part of our public-private partnership, Via is available to offer customers a flat fee per trip unlike traditional ride-hailing services, which charge for mileage or other factors. Customers using Via will not face surge pricing based on their location in the service area.

Vans used for the rideshare program are clearly marked with both the City of Arlington and Via logos for easy identification. Customers can also take comfort in knowing that their Via driver has undergone a robust background check to be eligible to participate in the City’s public transportation pilot program.

Are service animals allowed to ride with me on Via?

Trained service animals are welcome to ride on Via without restrictions. Other dogs and cats must be in an airline-approved carrier in order to ride with Via.
