Redistricting Task Force Votes on Recommended Single-Member District Map, Which will be Presented to City Council Nov. 30, 2021

The Redistricting Task Force’s recommendation of a new map of Arlington’s five single-member City Council Districts will be presented at the upcoming City Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2021.

Redistricting is the process of updating single-member district boundaries every 10 years in response to new Census data, which now shows Arlington’s population at just over 394,000 people. During the redistricting process, the boundaries of the five single-member districts will be updated so that they have approximately the same number of residents.

The City Council is expected to approve a new map of single-member districts on Dec. 7 and Dec. 14, 2021, to be effective for the May 7, 2022, General Election.

The City of Arlington’s Redistricting consultant, the Bojorquez Law Firm, prepared three draft maps for the Redistricting Task Force’s consideration: Draft Map A, Draft Map B, and Draft Map C, which included changes requested by the Task Force after reviewing the first two proposed maps. Citizens also submitted two maps for consideration: Citizen Map A and Citizen Map B. At its meeting on Nov. 16, 2021, the Task Force considered all five maps, heard comments from the public, and voted to approve Draft Map C as its official recommendation to the City Council for a new map of Council districts.

Draft Map C recommends slight changes in the existing district boundaries so that the population in each of the five districts is approximately 78,000 residents. Under this proposal:

District 1: 80,014 residents (32.1% White, 27.6% Black, 30.7% Hispanic, 0.3% American Indian, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Hawaiian; 0.4% Other Race, 3.5% Two or More Races)

District 2: 79,485 residents (43.9% White, 22.1% Black, 21.7% Hispanic, 0.3% American Indian, 7.0% Asian, 0.1% Hawaiian; 0.5% Other Race, 4.2% Two or More Races)

District 3: 80,327 residents (20.4% White, 28.6% Black, 34.4% Hispanic, 0.2% American Indian, 12.6% Asian, 0.1% Hawaiian; 0.4% Other Race, 3.2% Two or More Races)

District 4: 74,733 residents (54.5% White, 15.1% Black, 19.9% Hispanic, 0.3% American Indian, 5.4% Asian, 0.1% Hawaiian; 0.4% Other Race, 4.3% Two or More Races)

District 5: 79,707 residents (25.0% White, 17.9% Black, 45.9% Hispanic, 0.3% American Indian, 7.7% Asian, 0.1% Hawaiian; 0.5% Other Race, 2.7% Two or More Races)

The presentation is set to be made during the City Council afternoon work session Nov. 30.
