After the new sanitary sewer line was complete, Arlington Parks and Recreation finished improvements to the affected area of the Bob Findlay Linear Park Trail. That included widening about 1,400 feet of the existing trail from 8 feet to 12 feet. The trail reopened in this month.

Arlington Water Utilities recently completed the rehabilitation of an existing 66-inch sanitary sewer main near Westwood Drive and Village Creek, several months earlier than expected.

The sewer main in North Arlington carries millions of gallons of wastewater each day. The main was temporarily repaired in 2015 after it partially collapsed as a result of internal corrosion of the pipe material. The latest project, which involved an innovative, permanent solution, began in October.

The rehabilitation of about 1,100 feet of the 66-inch main required the temporary closure of a section of Bob Findlay Linear Park Trail. A new 60-inch main was inserted into the existing main using a method called sliplining. Millions of gallons of sewer flow also had to be temporarily rerouted using five pumps powered by generators 24 hours a day, for 30 days.

Water Department engineering and field operations teams were able to determine what area of the 66-inch required rehabilitation using the video, sonar and laser data gathered by a multi-sensor main inspection device. Then, they selected a method for the project that led to quicker than anticipated completion of construction.

Arlington Water Utilities Director Craig Cummings says using the latest technologies in pipe assessment and replacement led to a highly successful project.

“We appreciate the patience shown by residents in the neighborhood as we worked to strengthen this vital piece of City infrastructure.”

The Arlington City Council approved a $1.9 million construction contract for the project in August and work at the site started in October. An abandoned concrete metering station nearby was also demolished as part of the project.
