Carter BloodCare seeks blood donations.

Carter BloodCare is putting out an urgent request for blood donations.

Carter BloodCare, the community blood center for north, central and east Texas, is experiencing a critical shortage in the blood supply due to schools being out and businesses encouraged to work from home. Now that non-emergent and elective procedures have resumed, hospitals need more blood products for transfusions. With the current inventory levels, the blood center is triaging orders from hospitals, even as the medical facilities attempt to resume full capacity of medical and surgical services.

Carter BloodCare needs to see 1,000 donors a day, and of all blood types. Carter BloodCare is also calling on young community members to donate on behalf of more vulnerable populations.

Organizations can pitch in by booking a blood drive for the summer months. Carter BloodCare is specifically looking for companies to host drives that have space for an inside setup that allows for more social distance between donor beds. If a place of business settling back into the office would like to host a drive, email [email protected].

In the era of COVID-19, Carter BloodCare knows the safety of donation is top of mind for donors. These are some ways donors can do their part to help. To reduce wait times, donors can fill out the medical questionnaire online before they show up to donate blood. This means fewer people are waiting, making it easier to “social distance” between donors. Carter BloodCare is also putting fewer donors on a bus at one time, for social distancing reasons; making an appointment is best for getting right in to the blood drive and reducing lines of donors.
