Cardboard Boat Regatta

Does cardboard float? It can for crafty boat builders participating in River Legacy's 28th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta, scheduled for Saturday, April 22 at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor.

Register your boat by April 10 to set sail in this wildly fun event and to get creative with cardboard. Registration fees range from $55 to $90, and include admission tickets.

River Legacy's Regatta challenges amateur boat builders, youth and adults alike, to build, navigate, and float - or sink - their corrugated cardboard creations in Hurricane Harbor's Wave Pool. Groups, companies, schools, families and organizations can step up the Regatta challenge by participating in the Team Challenge, which combines the boat races with Horseshoes and Spikeball tournaments. Entry fees for both sports are $50 each. Teams must register by April 10.

"Thanks to our sponsor and expert boat builders at Harris Packaging, participants can get boat building support by purchasing a pre-cut boat kit that all they have to do is assemble, paint and decorate to make it their own theme," said Kristi Payne, Marketing Coordinator. "Boat kits cost $100 and make it easy for families and teams who have never built a boat before to join in on the fun."

Participants can come to the Regatta in style this year by pre-ordering new performance T-shirts online at riverlegacy.shirtsforacause.com or by texting riverlegacy to 817.369.3022. Order T-shirts for $12 to $16 by April 12. Shirts will be shipped direct before event day.

Family-fun activities during the Regatta include a children's area featuring a Mini-Boat "Raingutter" Regatta and Hook's Lagoon; unlimited rides on the Tornado, Tsunami Surge & Typhoon Twister with the purchase of a $10 wristband; Build-on-Site boats; Whale Sail for a chance to win fabulous prizes; and concessions. During the Mini-Boat Regatta, children ages 4 to 12 sail their mini pinewood boats to victory by blowing them down a rain gutter. Mini-Boat pinewood kits can be purchased at River Legacy Living Science Center. Cost to enter the Mini-Boat Regatta is just $5.

Advance purchase Regatta admission tickets will be on sale through April 21 at River Legacy Living Science Center for just $6. Event-day tickets are $8 at the gate. Hurricane Harbor is not open to the public, so season passes are not valid admission for this event.

The Cardboard Boat Regatta is a fund-raising event presented by River Legacy Foundation and the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department. Proceeds from the event benefit the educational programs of River Legacy Living Science Center.
