Library Donation

Union Pacific has donated $25,000 to Arlington's new George W. Hawkes Downtown Library.

The new library building, which is currently under construction just south of the train tracks running through downtown Arlington, will provide state-of-the-art technology and services. Dan Harbeke of Union Pacific looks forward to watching this donation benefit Arlington for generations to come.

"Libraries are foundational, especially for children," Harbeke said. "Early literacy sets children up for lifelong development and learning."

Today, education can provide the same type of mobility that that trains used to offer. Union Pacific works with nonprofit organizations, cities, and educational groups to promote literacy and build communities.

"Union Pacific has a strong focus on community," Harbeke said. "America has a long legacy of towns that grew and prospered because the railroad came through. We're bringing that history into the future by funding workplace development, job training, safe community spaces, and civic development - just like the Downtown Library will provide."

This donation is Union Pacific's largest grant in northwest Texas, from San Marcos to Texarkana. It will support the new Downtown Library, which is scheduled to open to the public in summer 2018.
