Located in the southern part of the city, the Arlington Municipal Airport could soon get a facelift, thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Texas Department of Transportation's Aviation Division.
Airport officials say the money will be used to create a 10-year development plan that will highlight what improvements are needed at the airport.
"The grant is to be used for creation of a new Airport Development Plan, said Airport Manager Karen VanWinkle. "This is a planning document required by the FAA and TxDOT Aviation. It provides a snapshot of current Airport conditions, and a roadmap for Airport development. It evaluates the need for new infrastructure, based on current use and forecasts."
VanWinkle went on to say the projects in the plan are eligible for federal and state airport improvement grants.
One possible improvement on the radar: extending the runway 700 feet to accommodate larger aircraft. The airport handled about 75,000 flight operations during fiscal year 2013.
Arlington Municipal Airport will hire a project consultant this winter to study future development plans, which will be paid for by the city of Arlington and future federal dollars. Approximately 275 community airports are eligible to receive money through TxDOT's aviation grant program.
