Volunteer of the Month

When police officers and staff see Diane Kiel at the East Police Service Station, it's hard to tell she's a volunteer.

"She interacts well with everyone, works hard and always has a smile," said Office Coordinator Zipporah Slater, who nominated Diane Kiel for City of Arlington Volunteer of the Month recognition.

Since Diane Kiel began arriving at the East Police Service Center a year ago, she has proven that she can do just about any task that needs to be done.

Whether she is working on an in-service training spreadsheet for officers or organizing the district's personnel filing system, Diane is a dedicated team player at this station, which is home to about 64 officers.

She enters citations, organizes fuel receipts and completes monthly reconciliation reports. She always makes sure that packets are available in patrol units. These packets contain helpful DWI and family violence resource information.

Diane shows up to assist without needing instruction, Slater said. She has also logged volunteer hours at the South Police Service Station where she helped with administrative tasks similar to those at the east station.

"And she does it all with a smile and an attitude that shows us that she enjoys being here," Slater said. "We enjoy having her here, and we appreciate all she does."

Unlike most full-time employees with the Police Department, Diane works only Tuesday and Thursday mornings for about four hours a day. She has never earned a paycheck for her work and there are no benefits unless you count this award.

"I am really surprised," Diane said. "I don't think I do anything special. I just come in and do what needs to be done."

In 2012, Diane retired from Kraft Foods and volunteers in her city for a variety of reasons.

"First of all, it gets me out," she said. "I can help others. I have the spare time and I enjoy working."

Congratulations! Diane Kiel, June Volunteer of the Month.
