Tax-Free Weekend a Huge Benefit for Arlington Residents and Businesses

In Texas, August not only brings scorching heat, but thanks to the Texas state government, it also means sizzling savings just in time for back-to-school shopping.

From Friday, Aug 8 through Sunday, Aug 10, the Tax Free Weekend law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, thus saving shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. The tax exemption also applies to layaways if the customer places the qualifying merchandise on layaway during the holiday or makes the final payment during the holiday. Customers can also use a rain check no matter when it was issued and the merchandise also qualifies for the exemption.

In Arlington, Tax Free Weekend is great for shoppers and businesses. "It's one of our biggest weekends. Our sales increase between 50 and 60 percent," said Lisa Stellato, owner of Kiddo's Kloset Resale, which is located in central Arlington on Park Row Road between Bowen Road and Fielder Road. "We're normally closed on Sundays, but we're open from noon to 5:00 p.m. on that Sunday (Aug.10) to handle all the business."

The Parks Mall at Arlington is another hot spot during Tax Free Weekend. "It has become an event in itself," said Marketing Manager Debra Martinez. "We work our other events around that weekend because it's such a big event." The Parks Mall at Arlington will also have extended hours during Tax Free Weekend. The mall will open at 9:00 a.m. and close at 10:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, it will open at 11:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m.
