Pet ownership can really be a positive force to an elderly person, especially those living in senior living facilities. Many of the senior citizens living in Arlington facilities want to own a pet, but are unable to afford the pet deposit at the facility. Thanks to the Arlington Animal Services Center (AASC), help is on the way.

On Saturday, October 5 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Arlington Animal Services Center, 1000 SE Green Oaks Blvd, will host a yard sale to raise money for seniors interested in adopting a pet. View the event flyer.

"We are starting a donation account which will enable us to help sponsor the pet deposit at each senior living facility where there's a person who would like a pet but cannot afford it," said Arlington Animal Services Manager Chris Huff. The pet deposit can be anywhere from $200-$500, depending on the location.

Studies show that people who have a pet live longer. Their stress levels go down just by petting a dog or cat.

Huff went on to say AASC is hoping to match up a senior person with a senior pet. Donations from Saturday's yard sale will help AASC do exactly that. "Our goal is to raise $1000 for this program, which will continue throughout the year," Huff said.

In addition to monetary donations, AASC is accepting items suitable for sale. All donations will be accepted Friday, October 4 from 3-6 p.m. at the Arlington Animal Service Center. Click here to donate online.
