Thousands of students at The University of Texas at Arlington live in the region impacted by the destructive forces of Hurricane Harvey. Some of these students lost everything they own.
While the University is making academic accommodations for the victims, it also recognizes that these students are struggling to meet basic needs. The University is tapping into its Emergency Assistance Fund (EAF) to offer Harvey's victims immediate monetary assistance for necessities such as shelter, food, water and medicine.
The University is raising money for the EAF in multiple ways:
- A previously-scheduled appearance by award-winning actor, director and alumnus Lou Diamond Phillips has been converted to a fundraiser. Phillips, a native of Corpus Christi and a 1985 graduate of UTA, considers the Texas Gulf Coast his home. Proceeds from ticket sales at his Maverick Speakers Series appearance will benefit the EAF.
- Phillips' lecture is at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7 at Texas Hall, 701 W. Nedderman Dr. Tickets for the lecture are available online, with the cost varying from $5 to $35.
- An exclusive dinner reception with Phillips precedes the lecture at 5:30 p.m. Some VIP tickets for this event remain.
- Individual donations to the EAF can also be made online.
UTA's efforts to help fellow Texans continue. A number of UTA student groups are hosting donation drives on campus. The UTA Police Department sent a group of officers to Houston to relieve The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Police Department. About 30 UTA students have been activated as members of the Texas National Guard. They are currently serving in critical safety and security roles in Southeast Texas
