Arlington Public Library to Host Genealogy Lock-In on Friday

Get ready for a full day of family history and genealogy workshops! The Arlington Public Library is offering anotherGenealogy Lock-In on Friday, October 20 from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Celebrate Family History Month as the Library remotely joins the Genealogy Center of the Waco-McLennan County Library for their live videos of expert presentations. Video of remote experts will be streamed and shown on the flat screen TV at the Lake Arlington Branch.

The Library closes at 5 p.m., but the genealogy presentations will keep going until 9:30 p.m.! Enjoy this special opportunity to be in the Library after hours. Attendees who arrive after the branch closes at should come to the building's staff entry, on the west side of the building, to join the Lock-in.

Highlights of the Lock-in include an introduction for new genealogists, Beginner's Guide to Documenting your Family History, led by LaToya Devezin of the Austin History Center at noon. Anyone who's considered DNA analysis can learn tips at Connecting Your DNA Matches with Diahan Southard at 4 p.m. Click here to see full descriptions of the entire day's schedule.

Programming is come and go and includes something for everyone, including beginners. No registration is required. See the full schedule below:

  • Noon to 1:30 p.m. - Beginner's Guide to Documenting Your Family History

  • 2:50 p.m. to 3:50 p.m. - My Texans during the Republic
  • 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. - Connecting Your DNA Matches
  • 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Dinner break
  • 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. -Researching Your Czech Immigrant Ancestor's Background in the Old Fatherland
  • 7:10 p.m. to 8:10 p.m. - Get the Scoop on Your Ancestors with Newspapers
  • 8:20 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. - Discovering Your WWI Ancestor: Sources - Resources

The Lock-in features experts from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and Austin History Center, as well as authors and researchers. The Arlington Public Library's Genealogy and Local History will be on hand as well to connect patrons with library and other area resources.

Light snacks, water and coffee will be available throughout the day. A dinner break is built into the schedule from 5 to 6 p.m., but dinner is not provided. Click here for more details, including full presentation summaries.
