Short-Term Rental Permit Applications in Arlington to Open Aug. 1, 2019
Starting Aug. 1, 2019, property owners who want to operate a short-term rental in the City of Arlington will be required to apply for a permit.
After months of research and community input, the Arlington City Council approved a new ordinance on Tuesday, April 23 to establish an annual permitting process, set operating guidelines and designate specific zoning districts where short-term rentals will be allowed to operate. Prior to this vote, short-term rentals were not allowed per the City’s Unified Development Code. The new ordinance and code update would open this option to nearly 5,000 houses, townhomes, duplexes, and other single-family properties across the city, as well as apartment units. An estimated 400 short-term rentals currently operate in Arlington today.

Short-term rentals with a city permit will be allowed to operate in the following locations:
• The established Short-Term Rental Zone, which is anchored by the Entertainment District and extends approximately one mile from its center. The zone is bounded on the north by East Lamar Boulevard, on the west by Center Street, on the south by East Abram Street and on the east by the Southbound State Highway 360 Frontage Road.
• In Residential Medium Density (RM-12) and Residential Multi-Family (RMF-22) Districts
• In all non-residential and mixed-use districts at single-family structures that exist as of Aug. 1, 2019.
The short-rental permit application will be available on the City of Arlington Planning and Development site starting Aug. 1. The City Council is expected to vote on Tuesday, May 7, to set the short-term rental permit fee, currently proposed at $500 a year.
