Thinking about adding a backyard chicken coop? Here’s "egg"-xactly what you need to know so you don’t run a-"fowl" of city ordinances.

Can I have chickens?

Absolutely! You can own up to four chickens without distance or lot size restrictions, as long as those chickens are confined to your property.

Planning for a larger flock?

  • Five to 10 chickens must be kept in a coop 50 feet or more from the nearest house if your lot is less than half an acre.
  • 10 to 25 chickens must be kept in a coop 50 feet or more from the nearest house and your lot must be more than a half-acre.
  • 26 or more chickens must be kept in a coop 50 feet from the nearest house and your lot must be more than one acre.

Can I have roosters?

No. You are not allowed to own roosters within the City of Arlington except in an area zoned as agricultural.
