Definitions:

On-street facilities: a designated or undesignated area that can be used by bicyclists on any type of road or street that
is shared with motor vehicles. Examples are bike lanes (usually designated next to the shoulder) or the paved shoulder itself.

Off-street facilities: any designated or undesignated area that can be used by bicyclists that is not in an area shared with
motor vehicles. Examples include paved bike paths, trails through wooded areas, and the like.

Bike lane: the most common type of on-street facility; it is a track, path or marked lane designated for use by cyclists from
which motorized traffic is generally excluded.

Bike path: hard-surfaced trails that are separate from roadways and that meet certain rigorous standards for width, grade
and accessibility.

Shared-use sidewalks: a hard-surfaced trail that is used by pedestrians and cyclists simultaneously.

Buffer: any physical or spatial separation between lanes of moving vehicular traffic and a designated bike lane.
Examples are: raised medians, parked cars, rumble strips, etc.
