Background
The City of Arlington began working with the NRC, the
General Services Administration, and Poynter Scifres
Companies early in the site-selection process after learning
of a possible need for a new facility. In March 2009, Mayor
Robert Cluck sent a letter of support to NRC headquarters in
Rockville, Maryland. The retention effort also included
assistance from the city’s Community Development and
Planning Department.
Their new home at 1600 E. Lamar Blvd. contains 87,000
square-feet of space. Since 1975, the NRC has been located
at 612 E. Lamar Blvd. in the Texas Health Resource Building.
“Working together, we were able to strengthen a business
partnership and retain jobs that could have relocated
elsewhere,” said Economic Development Manager Robert Sturns.
About the NRC
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is a U.S. government
agency established in 1974 to regulate the nation’s civilian
use of nuclear materials to ensure adequate protection of
public health and safety. The NRC is headed by five
commissioners appointed by the president and confirmed by
the U.S. Senate. NRC Arlington is one of only four regional
offices in the nation.
