 Arlington Comes Together
A Community Dialogue on Race Relations
The City of Arlington and the Department of Justice hosted a
community dialogue on race relations at the Arlington Convention
Center in August 2008 to gather public input on race relations in
the city and help develop a community plan for communication and
cooperation.
Following a hate crime that occurred in north Arlington in December
2007, the Arlington branch of the NAACP and U.S. Justice Department
began meeting with Mayor Robert Cluck about racial stability and
harmony in the city. Organizers began meeting and Arlington
residents formed Arlington Coming Together or ACT. The group’s
mission is to help facilitate positive dialogue about race
relations.
The Department of Justice Community Relations Service is the United
States Justice Department's peacemaker for community conflicts and
tensions arising from differences of race, color and national
origin. It was created by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as a federal
agency dedicated to assisting state and local units of government,
private and public organizations, and community groups with
preventing and resolving racial and ethnic tensions.
